The Wonderful Poems Of Tobi Alfier
Quite a while ago now I was gifted a volume of poems by the writer "Tobi Alfier" It was called "Down Anstruther Way". This slight volume of poetry resided for a while in my "To be Read" bundle. Deep and voluminous, the bundle, resides upon a chest of drawers near my bed. Often filled with "Heavyweight" psychological mysteries, dark horror and the oddest of the odd Hard sci-fi along with miscellaneous high brow works. This morning, having just finished a tuberous, dark and unsettling but excellent work "The Crow Girl" the night before, I reached out to my bundle and started reading this short volume of poetry.
Long have been the days and nights since such beautiful images have been placed in my mind. I think that whilst writing the longer tale and chasing the money that I had forgotten the pure, untarnished beauty of poetry. This beautiful short volume brought it all back to me.
I wish to add a few lines here to help you feel the power and everyday perfection of the poems.
Were I not to choose then you would have the whole book here and I am sure that the author would be rather annoyed with me as her sales would be stymied.
"As she watches the buses, campers with bicycles, and tourists go by on the way to the ferry". It is so simple but evocative, creates a picture, a daydream if you wish..
My favorite but one is. (from the poem "Cello") "She is reflected backwards in the shadow box of mirrors, her head nodding to the beat". Again it conjures up images and Ideas. You have a full story in one line of beautiful poetry.
For me however, and I have thought of this line so often since I read it only ten or so hours ago is
"This gift from the land to the witness climbs
in and burrows like comfort. It will stay with you
Always, if you allow".
Wonderful. The Poets name is Tobi Alfier. Look her up, read and appreciate the beauty.
Raymond.
